Hello beautiful parents, welcome back to another parenting blog post where I fill you in on all my best tips and tricks about parenthood. This week we are talking about the topic “how many burp cloths do I need?” Again, while this does seem like a non-significant question –trust me, it is.
Whether you are a first-time parent or not, you should already know that babies spit up a lot, like a lot, a lot.
Knowing how many burp cloths is a serious and totally valid question that needs to be discussed! And that’s precisely what we’re going to today. Let’s get started, shall we?
What is Burp Cloth?
We’re getting back to the basics here just if you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about (my partner included before we had our first). You can never be too careful these days –am I right?
Burp cloths are a super essential and glamourous baby essential that every parent needs to put on their registry. Burping cloths are a small piece of fabric that parents generally drape over their shoulders after feeding their little ones.
This is to protect their clothing from any spills, drooling, and of course, spit-up while your baby is burping your child.
Trust me, these things are lifesavers, especially when your little one spits up a couple of times a day after chugging their milk. No parent needs to do those many loads of laundry.
Burping cloths are much thicker than ordinary everyday towels. They are super absorbent to prevent any liquid from soaking through and staining your clothing.
You can also use burping cloths to wipe up any mess from the mouth of your little one as well when they eat –the options are endless!

What Fabric Burping Cloth Should I Buy?
When it comes to the type of fabric you should look for when purchasing burping cloths, you will want to make sure that it is made from a cooling and breathable fabric. Your little one doesn’t get warm and uncomfortable when you are burping them.
You also want to look for easy-to-wash and maintenance materials because those suckers are going into the wash at least once a day. Most burping cloths are made of terry cloth, cotton, or even flannel.
The nice thing about these fabrics is that they are hypoallergenic, so you don’t have to worry about your baby having any allergies to them.
What Size Burping Cloth Should I Buy?
Burping cloths are made relatively the same size across different sizes. One thing you will notice is that the cloths are rectangular. They are made this way to completely drape over the shoulder comfortably without falling off when you are burping your little one.
If you looked hard enough, you could find burping cloths in different shapes and sizes, but I recommend sticking with the classic rectangle shape; it does the job. However, this is totally up to the parent to choose what they like!
How Many Burping Cloths Do I Need?
Okay, we’ve made it to the answer to your burning questions, parents. When your baby is a newborn, I suggest having around 10-15 burping cloths on your hands at all times. This is because newborns tend to get sick way more often as they feed than toddlers etc.
Make sure you have at least one cloth handy with you at all times after feed and a spare close by just in case you need to wipe anything up.
Although it may seem like a lot. Just remember that you will go through burping cloths like crazy the first couple of months with your newborn.
Make sure you have enough laying around so when you have cloths in the washing machine, you are scrambling around the house looking for one as you have spit up all over your shoulder (you’ll thank me later, I promise).
When traveling, as a rule of thumb, I use to bring 3-5 just in case. You never know what could go wrong –especially with a newborn, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.
I should also note that the number of burping cloths will also depend on how many babies you have. If you have twins, triplets, quadruplets, or more, you’re going to want to clear out at least one baby store to make sure you have enough.
